A Commitment to Sustainability

Twenty-five years ago, the United Nations defined sustainability as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." At ITT, we embrace this concept and are committed to improving our practices and processes so that we are continually moving toward sustainability.

Sustainability is inherent in the ITT business model. It is driven by internal values, not by external requirements. We are in pursuit of top-tier results across the "triple bottom line" that measures economic, environmental and social performance.

Sharing Our Progress

We have been sharing our progress along this path for the past decade. Every year since 1996, we have published an annual report that documents our performance in the areas of environment, safety and health. For the last three years, that information has been included as part of a larger report, like this one, that covers all aspects of corporate responsibility.

This report addresses significant issues that have an impact on ITT and/or our stakeholders, and also ones that we can control or on which we can have an impact in some way. To identify material issues to be considered for inclusion in this report, we consulted members of ITT's senior management team, advisors from Ceres-a leading coalition of environmental, investor and public interest groups working for a sustainable future-and representatives from peer companies who are members of the Ceres coalition.

Published in August 2008, this report covers all of ITT's operations and when possible includes the businesses and facilities brought into ITT as part of our significant acquisitions of International Motion Control and EDO Corporation in 2007. The document includes information about our company's performance in the time frame from January 2007 to June 2008.
